With ongoing trade tensions between Canada and the United States creating uncertainty for many industries, the Barrie Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Barrie BIA have teamed up to help local businesses expand their reach overseas. The two organizations have officially launched the ‘Barrie-Harrogate Twin City Exchange’ - a new initiative aimed at connecting Barrie businesses with counterparts in Harrogate, England, a town in North Yorkshire with strong ties to tourism and manufacturing.

A piece of property currently vacant could soon be home to an expanded manufacturing facility in Barrie. On Wednesday night Barrie councillors held a public meeting for the recent rezoning of 131 Lockhart Rd. On April 9, Mayor Alex Nuttall directed staff to begin the process of preparing the necessary bylaw with his strong mayor powers.

Nearly one year after Barrie city council reversed course on a controversial plan to bring big changes to the City’s south shore, the other corner of the waterfront is now under the spotlight. Friday Night Fever took over the dance floor at Barrie’s Liberty North on Friday evening. Marking 30 years of efforts in the community, the Season’s Centre for Grieving Children held its annual Tender Hearts Gala at Barrie’s Liberty North. It was started by Rowley Ramey after the tragic loss of his two daughters. The organization supports youth who have lost a close family member, such as a parent or sibling, by bringing them together and providing a sense of community.

A heavy police presence has been observed Friday evening on a popular Barrie thoroughfare. While police are not releasing many details, a spokesperson for the Barrie Police Service has confirmed officers are conducting a death investigation. Multiple police cruisers were seen on Harvie Road, between Fairview Road and Bryne Drive early Friday evening. Police did not say when officers were called to the scene.
