One afternoon in May 2023, I was sorting laundry at Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility, a medium security prison in San Diego, when the tower officer ran an alarm test. The old alarms had just been replaced and, because of where I was standing, I caught a direct blast of the newer, louder alarm. At once, I jumped and broke into a run, searching for cover. A friend of mine was nearby. He burst into laughter. “You broke!” he said. I hadn’t even thought about what I was doing.

While Hurricane Beryl hit Texas as a Category One on Monday, currently, 1.2 million Texans are still without power, and there is no word about when it will come back on. It matters a lot since the Harris County area is under a heat advisory, and temperatures this week have been over 100°. Yesterday, Spectrum customers in the San Antonio and South Texas area had their phones and internet down for the entire day. Spectrum stated that Hurricane Beryl caused third-party infrastructure issues.

I have wanted to write this post for a while because it’s something that I, myself, will want to continually re-read for self-guidance. I organize a lot in Houston, and spend my days understanding the current events of Houston’s political atmosphere, but our city’s history gives important context to these events as they unfold. I have not read every book on this list, or even most of them. I have bolded the titles that I have read, and provided information about what I think of them.

AbstractEpithelial migration is implicit in processes ranging from gastrula development to the healing of skin, and involves the coordinated motion, force production, and resulting energy expenditure of thousands of constitutive cells. However, the spatiotemporal patterning and regulation of energy expenditure during epithelial migration remains poorly understood. Here, we propose a continuum mechanics framework and use it to explore how energy expenditure regulates epithelial migration.
