    Cochrane’s Gyanendra Sharma, better known as Chef G, aims to take Nepalese Cuisine to the highest level by participating in a Mt. Everest International Gastronomy Event dubbed the Seven Summit Alpine Food Festival from April 20 to May 4. The cook off will host Nepalese chefs from around the world, where they will show the new heights, literally and figuratively, of Nepalese cuisine.

    Cochrane Athlete Kylee Toth is gearing up to compete at the highest levels of ski mountaineering, also known as skimo, with her sights ultimately set on the 2026 Winter Olympics in Cortina. Toth, a previous Olympian, explained that the mountain sport is heavily endurance-based where competitor ascend and descend mountains on skis. “This is a new sport to the Olympic program for 2026,” Toth explained.

    Despite harsh winter conditions, Calgarians and Cochranites gathered for a special candle light vigil to honour Ania Kaminski-Wardzala and her father Stanislaw Wardzala in the community of Tuscany on Jan. 3. Thirty-three-year-old Kaminski-Wardzala was killed in Calgary on Dec. 29, following a Christmas Day domestic dispute. Her 71-year-old father was killed on the same day, but at a different location. She leaves behind three young children.

    Retired emergency workers from the City of Calgary gathered in Cochrane to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1974 Black Friday Shooting, while honouring the heroes who responded to the deadly incident. Brian Winter of the Cochrane EMS Crisis Citizen Action Club said the Dec. 20 event, was an informal way of honouring several paramedics who were working that day. “We just thought we’d come and say thank you, and mark the day of the 50th anniversary of the big shooting,” Winter said.
