FRANKLIN — After a contentious discussion at last month’s meeting, the city council declined to vote on a motion to relocate Kayak Man from Trestle View Park. A 5-4 majority vote Monday night at the council meeting tabled the motion. Kayak Man, a 22-foot art piece created by Colby Morrill from seven kayaks, was the product of a contest put on by former City Manager Judie Milner. Discussion of moving the piece brought an outpouring of support for Kayak Man.

MEREDITH — More than 50 years ago, Granite Staters saw fewer loons swimming on their lakes. With no system in place to monitor the species, the dramatic decline of New Hampshire's beloved bird was not accurately documented. When the Loon Preservation Committee was founded in 1975, there were only 74 territorial pairs of common loons in the state. Thanks to aggressive conservation efforts, in 2022, a census counted 345 pairs.

Brothers Samuel, 14, and Noah, 13, Lafever, played a pickup game of lacrosse with Brecken O’Reilly, 15, in their Whipple Avenue neighborhood of Laconia during spring break on Wednesday afternoon. Samuel is a member of the junior varsity team at Laconia High School, and Brecken plays for the varsity team.

FRANKLIN — There were no injuries following a residential building fire on Spring Street Monday afternoon. The fire department was notified of the fire by a call to 911 at 3:28 p.m.Firefighters extinguished the blaze by 5 p.m., and cleared the scene shortly after. No one was living in the building, which was vacant at the time of the fire. There was minimal damage to the structure, but smoke may have affected contents like furniture and bedding. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
