For 24 years, Arts Orange County has presented the Annual Orange County Arts Awards, celebrating organizations, artists, and patrons in the community who have made a significant impact. At the ceremony last month, the organization honored Carl St.Clair with a Special Recognition. This season marks St.Clair’s 35th year leading Pacific Symphony as its music director. He remains the longest tenured American-born music director of a major American orchestra.

Chef, restaurateur, best-selling cookbook author, and New York Times contributor Yotam Ottolenghi discussed his new book “Comfort” at Irvine Barclay Theatre on Oct. 13. The first portion of the evening will be moderated by James Beard Foundation winner Nancy Silverton as Ottolenghi takes the audience through the book’s recipes. “KISSSSS” by Yong Soon MinUCI Jack and Shanaz Langson Institute and Museum of California Art (IMCA) celebrates Min, an artist, curator, and UC Irvine professor who died earlier this year. Min’s work investigates the ongoing Korean War, colonialism, intersections of memory and history, and diasporic identity. “KISSSSS,” opening Oct. 5, is a new installation of three works that address the Demilitarized Zone—the liminal space between North and South Korea.

HOW DID THE IDEA FOR “JOAN” COME ABOUT? We get plays submitted through many different forms. This one just came directly to me from a friend and associate who’s a producer, and I read it, and I thought, “There’s something about this.” I was wandering around thinking about it a lot.

WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND CHORAL ARTS INITIATIVE? When I was an undergrad, I needed conducting footage to put together a portfolio for graduate school applications. We put on a benefit concert to raise money and give it to a local charity, and also get the conducting footage. It was after the concert that many of the musicians I got to work with were all telling me, “That was actually kind of fun.
