The U.S. Supreme Court has allowed Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin to wrongfully remove qualified voters from the voting rolls less than one week before the 2024 presidential election. This misguided and eleventh-hour ruling permits Virginia to disenfranchise over 1,600 eligible Virginia voters based on unreliable data and discriminatory lies unfairly targeting naturalized and qualified U.S. citizens.

States across the country — from Kansas to California to Michigan — have updated their election laws to conform with a bipartisan federal law passed by Congress that includes new legal deadlines for casting and counting Electoral College votes. These new state laws add to the many safeguards that help ensure that states conduct their mandatory duty to certify elections on time. Congress passed the Electoral Count Reform Act (ECRA), in 2022 with strong bipartisan support.

Ahead of the 2024 election, voters, community organizations and nonprofits in Virginia and Alabama have successfully halted illegal voter purge programs that wrongfully targeted naturalized citizens, especially Black and brown voters. As a result of lawsuits filed by Campaign Legal Center and our partner organizations on behalf of our clients in both states, courts have ordered Virginia and Alabama to put an end to their efforts to prevent qualified U.S. citizens from voting in the 2024 election.

Surprise! The U.S. Supreme Court issued an eleventh-hour ruling on Arizona’s election practices and it has already created confusion for voters and election officials alike. On the bright side, the Supreme Court’s ruling means over 40,000 already-registered Arizona voters can vote in all federal elections — including for president and by mail. This is a crucial victory and cannot be understated as over 40,000 voters will retain their freedom to vote in this year’s crucial elections.

Felony disenfranchisement laws, which take away someone’s freedom to vote if they have been convicted of a felony, are the biggest remaining obstacle to a truly inclusive and equitable democracy in America. These laws proliferated in the United States as an intentional scheme to strip Black Americans of their freedom to vote and continue to disproportionately impact Black and brown voters.
