Roald Hazelhoff is a father, a grandfather, a U.S. citizen and one of the many qualified voters swept up in Alabama’s illegal voter purge. Just weeks before voters were set to head to the polls, Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen implemented an illegal purge program that unfairly and wrongly targeted naturalized U.S. citizens. This purge targeted over 3,200 voters — and even the state of Alabama admitted that more than 2,000 voters should have never been targeted by the program to begin with.

The U.S. Supreme Court has allowed Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin to wrongfully remove qualified voters from the voting rolls less than one week before the 2024 presidential election. This misguided and eleventh-hour ruling permits Virginia to disenfranchise over 1,600 eligible Virginia voters based on unreliable data and discriminatory lies unfairly targeting naturalized and qualified U.S. citizens.

States across the country — from Kansas to California to Michigan — have updated their election laws to conform with a bipartisan federal law passed by Congress that includes new legal deadlines for casting and counting Electoral College votes. These new state laws add to the many safeguards that help ensure that states conduct their mandatory duty to certify elections on time. Congress passed the Electoral Count Reform Act (ECRA), in 2022 with strong bipartisan support.

Campaign Legal Center (CLC) is representing two Alabama voters with past felony convictions in a lawsuit challenging a new law that could deprive many Alabamians of their freedom to vote in the 2024 election. The bill, H.B. 100, states that it will go into effect on October 1, 2024, just over a month before the election. The law effectively adds over 120 felonies to Alabama’s so-called list of “crimes of moral turpitude,” which take away a person’s right to vote.

The MNVRA provides Minnesotans — particularly Black, Indigenous and other Minnesotans of color — with necessary protections against racial discrimination in voting.
