I'm in pain. I'm always in pain. For most of my adult life I have had chronic pain. On the rare good days where I'm not in any pain at all, I feel such a euphoria from that relief that my partner says I seem high. Those good days are fewer and farther between as time goes on. I've been a good cripple. I work out for four hours every week to strengthen my muscles, to improve my cardiovascular system, to stabilize my joints.

My dad died last month. Grief has been odd. I'm not usually one to place great importance on the bonds of blood family. I think that we choose who we associate with, and that the only implicit advantage of familial bonds is the propinquity effect from spending many years in close quarters. I've felt differently since he died. I have not thought differently, but felt differently.
