AUSTIN, Texas — Mother Nature is “throwing us a lot of curveballs right now,” said Matt Mitchell with Austin Energy, as Central Texas weathers increasingly severe and unpredictable storms. While most of Austin’s power lines are underground, Mitchell said the above-ground lines have been repeatedly battered by intense weather. “What we're seeing more and more is that sometimes these storms are not doing what they're forecasted,” said Mitchell.

AUSTIN, Texas — The Austin Fire Department worries manufacturing backlogs and increased costs could force it to use older, less reliable trucks in the future. "These are getting up there in age," said Thayer Smith, assistant chief of operations and logistics for the Austin Fire Department. Smith said AFD's reserve fleet is getting older than he would like. "Right now, we are probably close to the max on most of our reserve fleet," said Smith. "They're anywhere between that 12- and 15-year mark.
