Global mining giant Rio Tinto said it will invest $1.2 billion to modernize a hydroelectric power plant in Quebec, Canada. The company on May 15 said the project is part of its bid to secure future aluminum production in the Canadian province, even after the Trump administration imposed 25% tariffs on U.S. imports of aluminum and steel from Canada earlier this year. The money will pay for upgrades to the 448-MW Isle-Maligne hydropower plant, which was commissioned in 1926 in Alma, Quebec.

Project manager Bechtel said further construction of the 1.3-GW Mammoth Solar facility in Indiana is moving forward, with the company on May 16 saying the project "kicked its construction activities into a higher gear this month."Bechtel was selected by Doral Renewables, a Philadelphia, Pennsylvania-based developer, owner and operator of renewable energy projects, to deliver the next three phases of the solar farm.

NRG Energy announced it would acquire 18 natural gas-fired power plants with 13 GW of generation capacity as part of a $12-billion cash-and-stock deal with LS Power. Houston, Texas-based NRG on May 12 said the deal, expected to close in the first quarter of 2026, would double the group's overall generation capacity portfolio to 25 GW. The gas-fired plants are located in the U.S. Northeast and Texas, the company said Monday.

State-owned Coal India Limited (CIL) has announced plans to invest about $3 billion to build as much as 4.5 GW of renewable energy generation capacity. The memorandum of understanding, signed May 7 with major ammonia producer AM Green, is expected to significantly increase India's green hydrogen and ammonia production capabilities. The joint effort, announced by AM Green on May 9, comes just after CIL said it was partnering with Damador Valley Corp.
