    The crime unit has taken over the investigation of the death of an infant last year on Manitoulin Island, Ontario Provincial Police said Friday. The baby was pronounced dead Oct. 1, 2024, in Burpee Township. Paramedics responded just after 9 a.m. to reports of an “unresponsive infant at a residence,” police said in a news release. “The infant was transported to a local hospital by paramedics and later pronounced deceased.”Forensic testingThe crime unit took over the case following forensic testing.

    Big changes are coming to the Ramsey Lake waterfront as construction begins next month on Science North’s new floating dock. The project follows the decommissioning of the previous wooden section of the Jim Gordon Boardwalk last fall, which was more than 30 years old and was no longer safe for use. “Installation of the new dock is expected to be completed by the end of June, after which it will be open for public use,” Science North said in a news release this week.

    A search will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday at the M’Chigeeng fire hall on Manitoulin Island to look for Juanita Migwans, who has been missing since last fall. “They will gather with quiet purpose, lacing boots and hearts alike, for a ground search in honour of Juanita ‘Winnie’ Migwans — a woman loved deeply, whose absence has left an ache that winds through families and communities like the Manitou River itself,” organizers said in a social media post.

    Police in northern Ontario are investigating after thieves cut down 33 hydro poles by the Hound Chute Generating Station near Cobalt earlier this month. The poles were then stripped of copper wiring worth about $100,000, Ontario Provincial Police said Friday. The hydro police were taken down between May 1 and May 7 in the area of Silverfields Road in Coleman Township.

    A 31-year-old from Brampton, Ont., has been charged criminally in connection with the February 2024 death of a commercial motor vehicle driver on Highway 17A near Kenora. After investigating the fatal crash for more than a year, Ontario Provincial Police announced Thursday the driver of the SUV involved in the crash has been charged with dangerous driving causing death and dangerous driving causing bodily harm.
