HUNTINGTON BEACH — The Huntington Beach boys volleyball team took care of business Tuesday night by sweeping Redondo, 25-23, 25-23, 25-19, to move one step closer to a CIF-SS finals appearance. The Oilers (33-3) are now 2-0 in Division 1 pool play and can advance to the championship game with a win Friday over Loyola or with a Newport Harbor victory over the Cubs on Wednesday.

CYPRESS — Esperanza boys volleyball coach Jordyn Griggs emphasized to her players that they had the ability to surprise some teams in the CIF Southern Section Division 5 playoffs. On Friday night, the Aztecs did just that. They defeated fourth-seeded Cypress in five sets, 25-21, 20-25, 13-25, 25-20, 15-11, to advance to the quarterfinals on Wednesday.

NEWPORT BEACH — The Huntington Beach boys volleyball was on the verge of accomplishing something it hadn’t done in nearly a decade, so the Oilers had to make it special. With their win over Newport Harbor, 25-21, 12-25, 25-18, 25-21, on Friday night, the Oilers improved to 10-0 in the Sunset League play and won the league title outright for the first time since 2016.

SANTA ANA — A few weeks ago, the Mater Dei boys volleyball team was barely hovering above the .500 mark. Now, the Monarchs are in prime position to earn a highly-coveted berth in the Division 1 bracket of the CIF-SS playoffs and make a deep postseason run.
