TOPEKA (KSNT) – Our March honoree uses her unique upbringing and nursing background to care for young children and seniors, together, in the same place. Erin Steele was born in Manhattan. She spent a few years in western Kansas, then her large family moved to Wamego when she was in second grade after her dad took the postmaster job. When I say large family, I’m talking about 18 kids, same parents and all single births. “I’m number 12 so kind of in the middle,” Steele said.

REXBURG – Jess Goudy has been described by those who know her as a “collector of people,” with a gift for bringing people together to serve a common cause. The 40-year-old Rexburg woman is the face behind I <3 Life in Rexburg, a Facebook group that launched in 2016 hours after a group of the same name had been deleted. The original page — managed by a friend of Goudy’s — had been a valuable resource for community updates, particularly for local schools.

As a stay-at-home parent over the past 18 years, I have learned to love and appreciate the Public Works Department. They may think they are merely taking care of our streets, but they serve a real dual-purpose role as live entertainment for preschool-age children. I washed many dishes while the street sweepers drove back and forth. The laundry was much easier to fold when the tree-trimming crew was out the front window.

TOPEKA (KSNT) – Our February honoree is Director of Operations for a healthcare company, but she excels away from work by donating her time and energy to area nonprofits. Lauren Wolf has been in Topeka for more than 20 years and she stays very busy as a wife, mother, registered nurse and healthcare director. The desire to help others started during middle school when volunteering at Topeka Zoo and a local hospital.
