Charges have been dismissed against a Lawrence man accused of kidnapping and threatening a woman with a machete. TThe man, Daniel Louis Schuckman, 48, was charged with one count each of kidnapping, aggravated intimidation of a witness, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, interference with law enforcement and criminal threat, all felonies, and one count each of criminal deprivation of property and domestic battery, both misdemeanors, as the Journal-World reported.

All the preparations are being made for universities to begin directly paying their student-athletes next school year. The federal judge overseeing the key lawsuit in the matter hasn’t yet approved the settlement agreement between the NCAA, universities and aggrieved student-athletes, but earlier this month she did provide indications that she intends to do so. The NCAA on Monday, took a step in that direction too.

The University of Kansas was one of the top 60 universities in the country in terms of creating new inventions in 2024, reaching a new high in the brief history of the National Academy of Inventors report. KU was 59th in the country in the recent NAI report that measures the number of utility patents that universities receive for work conducted by researchers and faculty members. KU was 94th in 2023 and 65th in 2022, the first year for the report.

A murder trial where a 19 year-old man is alleged to have shot and killed a 17-year-old boy was delayed on Friday for the second time this year after the victim’s mother was charged with firing a gun at a Lawrence residence with children inside. Cir Allen Keith Glover, 19, of Lawrence, is charged with first degree murder in connection with the shooting death of 17-year-old Isaiah Neal on June 13, 2024 at 2406 Alabama Street.

A Lawrence man was sentenced on Friday to more than 10 years in prison for attacking a Douglas County sheriff’s deputy while in court in 2022. Last month, a jury convicted John Timothy Price, 36, of one felony count of battery on a law enforcement officer, and Judge Amy Hanley sentenced him on Friday to 130 months, or 10.8 years, in prison. The incident he was convicted for in March happened during two back-to-back trials in December 2022.
