PLEASANTON — After 22 years of service, Assistant City Manager Pamela Ott has decided to retire, effective Saturday, June 21. City Manager Gerry Beaudin has appointed Deputy City Manager Alexa Jeffress to succeed Ott. Jeffress will begin her new role as assistant city manager on July 1. Ott began as the city’s economic development manager in 2003 before becoming Pleasanton’s director of economic development and community engagement.

TRI-VALLEY — A tax-sharing dispute between the Livermore Area Recreation and Park District (LARPD) and the East Bay Regional Park District (EBRPD) has escalated to the point of LARPD terminating a 33-year-old agreement. LARPD issued a formal notice on May 29 to cancel the agreement, effective June 30.

LIVERMORE — The National Ignition Facility (NIF) at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) achieved fusion ignition for the eighth time on April 7, producing a net-energy gain from a controlled fusion reaction. Using a new fuel-capsule design, the experiment set records for both energy yield and target gain, producing 8.6 megajoules (MJ) of energy using 2.08 MJ of laser energy, or a target gain of 4.13. The results broke NIF’s own target-gain record, set in February, of 2.44.

PLEASANTON — Low-use customers will shoulder less of the city’s water costs during the next drought, following a city council decision last week to shift some of those costs to higher-use customers. The council also more than doubled the water-connection fee charged to developers adding new housing units to the city’s water system. During droughts, the city may call for water conservation ranging from 10% to 60% in usage reductions.

PLEASANTON — In an effort to boost the city’s economic vitality, Pleasanton city staff has proposed creating a new zoning-use category for light-industrial, innovation-based businesses. These would include a range of business types, such as startups in life sciences, biotechnology and food technology, that tend to not generate the noise, odor or other pollution commonly associated with industrial uses.
