I’ve written about legendary deer hunter Roger Raglin on this site before; click here for an article/video with him arrowing a big 4x4 whitetail. The Facebook video below made me laugh out loud. It details the origins of what could be the most famous saying in the hunting industry — “Jiminy Christmas!” — which Raglin says, and sometimes yells, every time he shoots a big buck.

Deer camp is a special place, and nothing I can write here could possibly explain it if you haven’t been a part of one. But I’ll still try. For me, deer camp started in northern Minnesota in a 20x30-foot one-room shack jammed from wall to wall with bunk beds, a tiny kitchen table and a wood-burning cook stove. After most days, wet clothes were hung close to the ceiling to dry by morning. When supper/storytelling was finished and dishes were washed and put away, friends and family members scattered.

If your Facebook timeline is anything like mine, it’s stacked with pics of giant bucks that have been killed during 2023. Every fall I see FB posts detailing Booners that hit the ground during early muzzleloader seasons, young kids killing named giants with a firearm over a food plot or bait during a special youth season, and diehard bowhunters filling their tag with private land monsters from Illinois, Iowa, Kansas and the like. I congratulate all of these successful hunters.

Of course, selecting the "best" bolt-action rifle for whitetail hunting is subjective, as it depends on personal preferences, budget and the specific hunting conditions you'll encounter. For example, the ideal rifle for a deer hunter sitting in a box blind overlooking a large ag field is far different than the one needed by a hunter sneaking through seemingly endless forest in the north country.
