LOS ANGELES — Devastating. Apocalyptic. Of biblical proportions. Now add a phrase to those apt descriptions of the January fires that ravaged Southern California: Political. It’s a realistic element of the fires, which killed at least 28 people and destroyed about 12,400 structures — the majority houses and plenty of businesses.

Bill Clinton of Arkansas was the nation’s youngest governor after his 1978 election at age 32. Two years later, he was the youngest former governor, having been ousted by voters after a single, two-year term. Clinton long blamed the loss, at least partly, on the top Democrat on the 1980 ballot, President Jimmy Carter, who, much more famously at the time, also lost his reelection bid.

HUNTINGTON BEACH, California — Finally, an election result Ronald Reagan would recognize — or at least something close to it. The late Republican president and GOP candidates up and down the ballot once dominated Orange County, California, elections. Reagan won nearly 75% of the vote there during his 1984 reelection landslide, and Republican presidential nominees won California six straight times from 1968 to 1988.

NEW YORK — Former President Donald Trump may live in Florida now, but he is embracing his New York roots. The Queens born-and-bred 2024 Republican presidential nominee said he agrees with a bipartisan push by members of New York’s congressional delegation to support expanding federal deductions for state and local taxes paid. That is a reversal of his policies and a major boost to high-tax states such as New York.

Departing Congress members have only over three months left in office. The next Congress is set to take office on Jan. 3, 2025. The list of departing lawmakers is already long but can be expected to grow after the Nov. 5 general election. It’s virtually certain that it will expand shortly after Election Day when Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) is heavily favored to win California’s open Senate seat. Because Schiff is also set to win a separate election to fill the final two months of the late Democratic Sen.

Rep. Chris Pappas (D-N.H.), running for Senate, is the fourth House member in the 2026 election cycle to give up their seat for a statewide office bid. Along with gubernatorial candidates, Reps. Andy Biggs (Ariz.), Byron Donalds (Fla.), and John Rose (Tenn.).

The late and beloved actor Val Kilmer pondered running for New Mexico governor in 2010, but decided against it.
