This isn’t an immediately ‘local’ news item, but given the importance and prominence of some of the great ancient oaks of Savernake forest, it’s a tale to tell. This relates to a 450-year-old oak in Whitewebbs Wood, Enfield. It hasn’t been ‘felled’, more pollarded, though I am guessing that is because someone didn’t get to finish the job before being stopped. I’ve got loads to say, but I don’t really know all the facts yet.

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - 324 Kansas kids were helped by LifeHouse Child Advocacy Center in Topeka in 2024. That number represents children who are victims of sexual or domestic violence, or who have witnessed a crime. The demand for services that help these local youth remains in high demand. “I immediately called the police, and took her to the hospital,” says Ashley Stagray, mother from Topeka.

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - You’re invited to join a celebration supporting Wamego Community Health Center. Their foundation’s Diamonds and Denim fundraiser is coming up. Wamego Health Center administrator Brian Howells and Kat Bruning, APRN visited Eye on NE Kansas to share details about the event. Diamonds and Denim is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. The event includes dinner, auctions and fun to support the Wamego Community Health Center and health and wellness in the Wamego area.

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Spring is a busy season for activities and exhibits at the Topeka Zoo. Cynthia McCarvel, development director for the zoo, stopped by Eye on Northeast Kansas to look ahead at what’s in store. The zoo will host and Earth Day Celebration Saturday, April 19, featuring a writing and art contest. One of the zoo’s biggest annual fundraisers, ‘Roar & Pour’ is set for Saturday, April 26.
