For decades, owning a home in the Buffalo Niagara region wasn’t an investment. It was a way to own a place to live. Not a path to build wealth. But that’s changed, especially over the past two decades, and especially over the last five years. Homeowners in the Buffalo Niagara region actually have been building wealth through their homes at a much faster pace than the national average since 2007, according to new home price data from the Federal Housing Finance Agency.

Data from about 40,000 people was stolen by hackers during a February cyberattack on Lee Enterprises, the company that owns The Buffalo News. The Iowa-based media company said the data breach included first and last names, as well as Social Security numbers. Lee said in a report to the Maine Attorney General's Office that 39,779 individuals were affected by the Feb. 3 data breach. The company is notifying those individuals by letter.

It’s all about the investment with manufacturers today. It’s not all about the hiring. That was clear last week when General Motors said it would invest $888 million in its Town of Tonawanda engine plant to make a new generation of V8 engines for full-size trucks and SUVs.The investment, the company said, would help protect 870 jobs at the plant, including 177 that state officials deemed to be at risk. What it won’t do is create any new jobs.

The battle for control of Elma motion equipment maker Servotronics Inc. is heating up. The company that agreed earlier this month to buy Servotronics for $38.50 per share raised its bid to $47 per share on Thursday after Servotronics received an unsolicited acquisition bid from another potential buyer.
