Steinhardt, a state senator from the 23rd legislative district and a former Lopatcong mayor, became county chairman in 2004 after Walter Orcutt declined to seek re-election. Orange City Councilman Kerry Coley, arrested in March for making terroristic threats and brandishing a gun in October 2024, will not face criminal charges. An East Ward councilman since 2014, Coley had allegedly displayed a gun during an incident involving a tow truck driver. “The Essex County Grand Jury did not find sufficient evidence to sustain the return on an indictment,” said the county prosecutor, Theodore Stephens, in a letter last month.
