PSNI officers are investigating whether the incident in the Waterside area of Derry on Saturday afternoon is linked to a similar sexually motivated attack involving a man with a knife in Drumahoe on the outskirts of the city on Friday evening.

The two pedestrians were in Main Street in Charleville when the incident happened shortly before 2pm on Saturday afternoon. They were taken to Cork University Hospital, where the woman, in her 70s, was later pronounced dead. A post-mortem examination will be arranged. The man, who is in his 60s, was understood to be in a stable condition in hospital on Sunday morning. The scene of the crash has been examined by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and the local coroner has been notified.

By David Young, PAA man has been arrested following the death of a woman in Co Down. Police said they were investigating the circumstances around the sudden death of the woman, who was aged in her 50s, in Donaghadee. She was found dead in a house in the Rosepark area of the town on Monday morning.

The public are being asked to help name an endangered baby Rothschild’s giraffe born at Belfast Zoo. The male was born on Sunday to mother Daisy and has since been delighting visitors and staff. The mother and baby have stayed inside the giraffe house for a few days together to give them plenty of bonding time. A shortlist of four potential names has been drawn up by the animal care team: Ballybracken, Ballymoe, Ballytober and Ballyrobert. A vote will take place on the Belfast Zoo Facebook page.

Police are investigating the report of a shooting incident in the Ganaway Walk area of Bangor. Shortly after midnight, on the morning of Thursday 18th July, officers received a report that a man, aged in his 30’s, had been approached by an unknown male at a grass area near Ganaway Walk, and shot once in his leg. Officers and ambulance staff attended and the injured man was taken to hospital for treatment.

Police are appealing for information following a report of an assault which occurred at the Donegall Square North area of Belfast on Thursday 4th July. Sergeant Earley said: “Shortly before 3:30am, it was reported that an 18 year old man was punched in the face by an unknown male as he was standing at the front of City Hall. The man was taken to hospital with a fractured jaw following the incident.

A man has been arrested following an incident of disorderly behaviour in the city centre of Derry/Londonderry on Wednesday afternoon, 3rd July, in which two officers dealing with the incident were assaulted. aies on Foyle Street in the presence of children. When challenged by a member of the public he left the area. Police responded and located a male matching the description of the male provided in the report. This man, aged 33 years old, was arrested on suspicion of disorderly behaviour.

A former Fonacab taxi driver who assaulted and threatened a front seat passenger with an imitation firearm whilst he was under the influence of cocaine was jailed for ten months on Tuesday. 49 year old Brian Stalford pled guilty to the offence at Laganside Crown Court on 14th May this year, and was sentenced today to 10 months in prison and 10 months on licence.

Police have charged two men following an altercation in a car park at a shopping centre in the York Street area of north Belfast on Friday evening, 31st May. A 58-year-old man has been charged with disorderly behaviour and possessing an offensive weapon in a public place, and is due to appear before Belfast Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 28th June.

The trial of three men accused of the murder of journalist Lyra McKee has opened in Belfast. Ms McKee (29), died after being struck by a bullet as she stood close to police vehicles while observing rioting in the Creggan area of Derry on April 18th, 2019. The New IRA claimed responsibility for the author’s murder. Peter Cavanagh (35), of Mary Street, Derry; Jordan Gareth Devine (23), of Bishop Street, Derry; and Paul McIntyre (56), of Kells Walk, Derry, are charged with her murder.
