The second of three new Coast Guard cutters set to be homeported in Kodiak has arrived. According to a social media post from the Coast Guard on June 2, the Earl Cunningham reached the island this weekend on May 31 after a more than 7,000 mile, months-long journey from the shipyard in Louisiana. Earl Cunningham joins the other cutter John Witherspoon which arrived on Base Kodiak in January and was commissioned into service in April.

Almost one year after Brechan Construction first applied to purchase city land on Near Island, the Kodiak City Council officially rejected the company’s request. On May 22 the council decided to stick with its minimum development plan for the island next to town. On May 20 during a work session, Doug Hogan sang the well-known Joni Mitchell song "Big Yellow Taxi" to the Kodiak City Council as part of his comments against Brechan’s proposal to move its operations to Near Island.

Nearly the entire community of Ouzinkie filled the school’s gymnasium on Thursday, May 22. Blue and yellow streamers decorated the entryway; a makeshift walkway of blue tissue paper leads the village’s two graduates under a bright blue star with dozens of balloons hanging in the air above. Two senior Hawks, the Ouzinkie school’s mascot, walked down the aisle to the podium at the end of the court.

The Alaska Legislature’s session ended Tuesday afternoon, May 20, after lawmakers passed the capital and operating budgets. Before those final hours, Kodiak’s legislators pushed forward bills on topics ranging from a world trade committee to commercial boat registration. Rep. Louise Stutes, who represents Cordova, Seward, Kodiak and smaller communities spread across District 5, sponsored a handful of bills and cosponsored roughly 10 others this session. That includes House Bill 31.

The head of Providence’s Kodiak Island Medical Center officially leaves his administrator position next week on May 31. But that job vacancy is only one of a few leadership jobs and one of dozens of medical positions Providence is struggling to fill in Kodiak. Not including the administrator position recently vacated by Karl Hertz, there are 24 job listings open at Kodiak’s medical center as of Friday, May 23, according to Providence’s job site.
