One week from today on May 7 is the deadline for all Alaskans to have a REAL ID in order to fly on commercial flights, including some small air carriers. The main place to get a new ID card that meets those requirements is through a state Department of Motor Vehicles’ office. Wednesday morning, April 30, just after 8:30 a.m., the lone employee at the Department of Motor Vehicles office in Kodiak, Kate Blondin, opens the doors and a few customers waiting in the parking lot trickle in.

Last week, from Thursday onward, a handful of earthquakes rumbled throughout Kodiak Archipelago communities. According to the Alaska Earthquake Center, two separate 4.5 magnitude earthquakes occurred within 45 miles of Kodiak on Thursday and Friday. Dozens of residents reported feeling the 4.5-magnitude earthquake that hit 43 miles east of Kodiak at 7:14 a.m. Thursday, according to social media posts and the center's report page.

The first cruise ship of the summer season arrived in Kodiak today, April 29. Initially there were 30 cruise ships scheduled to visit the island this year, but one Norwegian company canceled two of its vessels’ sailings. Hurtigruten Expeditions, which separated from its parent group Hurtigruten Group AS a couple months ago, owns a handful of hybrid powered cruise ships, including the Roald Amundsen and Fridtjof Nansen.

Dozens of residents reported feeling the 4.5 magnitude earthquake that hit 43 miles east of Kodiak at 7:14 a.m. on April 24 according to social media posts and the center’s report page.
