Some of Kodiak’s museums want to use space in the old hospital building to store hundreds of historical items. But before they can do that, the City Council has requested an architecture firm draw up designs on how the Griffin Memorial Hospital building’s space could be divided up. The future of the former 18-bed hospital on 316 Mission Road near downtown Kodiak has not yet been decided.

Along with adopting the upcoming fiscal year’s budget, the Kodiak Island Borough Assembly has also approved a slight reduction in property taxes. The Borough’s fiscal year 2026’s budget totals $28.9 million in revenue and $30.3 million in expenses. It’s been presented by the borough as a balanced budget, meaning the proposed expenditures won’t exceed anticipated revenues and the planned use of the fund balance.

Chiniak –just a 45 mile drive south of Kodiak – has a brand new mini-resort that opened this month. That comes after years of construction and zoning changes that took decades to create this property that the owners say could make Chiniak the “Girdwood of Kodiak”. Less than an hour drive south from Kodiak is a place aptly named “Friends by the Ocean”. Foxes, eagles and bears roam across Roslyn Beach in Chiniak. Nearby a handful of brand new structures overlook the roaring ocean.

Ideas to repurpose the recently closed North Star Elementary school, are being considered by a group of Kodiak Island Borough Assembly and School Board members. Two members of the Borough Assembly, Borough Mayor Scott Arndt and two members of the Kodiak Island Borough School District Board of Education makeup the North Star facility work group, which just held its first meeting on June 3.
