At the time of its 1995 dedication, the Children’s Fountain at North Oak and East 32nd Avenue, at the north end of downtown North Kansas City, was said to be the “largest fountain of its kind in America.” The fountain pumps five and a half thousand gallons of water per minute and at the time ran year-round, despite frigid winter weather.

Before Prohibition, Missouiri’s winemaking industry was one of the largest in the country, producing 100,000 gallons a year. In 1873, one of the state’s wines won Best of Show at the Vienna World’s Fair. Although the state’s winemaking capabilities are much less now, its wine scene is flourishing.

More than sixty years after it shuttered its doors, a small-town soda fountain lives on underneath the main floor of Kansas City Museum. In 1925, C.W. and Wilma R. Kirby’s drugstore in Modena, Missouri, approximately a hundred and forty miles northwest of Kansas City, was the social hub of their rural community.
