By Dean MurraySatellites spotted a "ghost" Island - and then watched it vanish. The landmass emerged from the Caspian Sea after a mud volcano erupted in early 2023. By the end of the following year, it had nearly eroded away, retreating from view "like an apparition," said NASA Earth Observatory. The OLI (Operational Land Imager) and OLI-2 on the Landsat 8 and 9 satellites captured images showing the island emerge and shrink about 25 km (15 miles) off the eastern coast of Azerbaijan.

The Red Arrows have chosen their pictures of 2024. The jaw-dropping selection includes incredible precision flying from displays in what was their diamond 60th anniversary season. Highlights include a striking image of aurora in Greenland as well as a flight over Niagara Falls as part of a tour of Canada. The Royal Air Force team's first year of performing was in 1965 and, since then, the team has displayed almost 5,000 times in 57 countries around the world.

Space boffins reckon there might be alien life on Mars and they reckon they've sussed out just the spot to start the hunt. A fresh study by NASA suggests that cheeky little microbes could be living it up under Mars' icy crust, potentially getting cosy beneath frozen water on the red planet's dusty surface. Snaps from NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) have nabbed shots of white bits along gullies that experts reckon is probably water ice covered in dust.
