After the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Thomas R. Carper Water Resources Development Act of 2024, on Dec. 10, Rep. Chuck Edwards issued a statement highlighting water infrastructure projects in Western North Carolina that will receive funding and dam-related laws that will go into effect if the bill becomes law as expected. The WRDA is legislation that Congress has been developing in a bipartisan manner and passing every two years since 2014.

HENDERSONVILLE— The Henderson County Board of Public Education welcomed two new members during its annual organizational meeting Dec. 9. Amy Lynn Holt and Beth Campbell were elected Nov. 5. Holt had previously served on the school board for 12 years. She left to run for a county commission seat in 2022 but narrowly lost that race.

HENDERSONVILLE—The Hendersonville city council at its Dec. 5 meeting passed an ordinance regulating the sale of consumable hemp-derived products to minors near schools. “It makes it unlawful to sell or give a hemp-derived consumable product to somebody who is under the age of 21 within 1,000 feet of a school or in a public park,” City Attorney Angela Beeker said during the meeting.

WASHINGTON—U.S. Congressman Chuck Edwards announced Dec. 5 that his office has set up a dedicated phone number — 223-FIX-FEMA — to help anyone who's had trouble getting assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) since Tropical Storm Helene hit Western North Carolina Sept. 27. “People are getting denied that should not get denied,” Edwards said in a call with the Hendersonville Times-News Dec. 5.
