A federal judge has put a hold on immigration officials’ move to deport an international student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In an order released Tuesday, Federal District Judge William Conley issued a temporary restraining order blocking federal immigration authorities from terminating UW-Madison student Krish Isserdasani’s F-1 student visa. Isserdasani is a 21-year-old student from India who is just weeks away from earning a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering.

Financially troubled Northland College will close at the end of the school year. The college Board of Trustees announced the closing Wednesday. The small liberal arts college in Ashland has been facing a possible shut-down since early 2024. Last March, school leaders said they would need to raise millions of dollars to stay open. On Wednesday, Board Chair Ted Bristol said in a written statement that despite those fundraising efforts and cost cutting, Northland is no longer financially viable.

A man housed in Racine County Jail awaiting trial for attempted homicide is expected to be charged with the beating death of a fellow inmate this week. The Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department, which is investigating the incident, said the assault happened Tuesday. According to a statement from the department, the victim of the assault was pronounced dead on New Year’s Day.
