Chadra Pittman stays busy as a storyteller, educator and anthropologist, especially this time of year. The second Saturday of June is recognized internationally as Middle Passage Remembrance Day to honor enslaved Africans who died at sea during the Transatlantic slave trade. Since 2012, Pittman has held a libation ceremony on the beach of Fort Monroe, where the first Africans were brought into a British North American colony more than 400 years ago.

Almost 10 years ago, Justin Sudderth sat in the audience of Norfolk’s Chrysler Hall, watching the national Broadway tour of “Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella.” The then 16-year-old had spent years dancing and singing with the Norfolk-based theater group The Hurrah Players and wondered about how cool it would be to be on a national stage one day.

Suffolk hosts its annual Holiday Parade 7 p.m. Saturday. The floats, equestrian units and marching bands will move along West Washington Street and turn up North Main Street toward Finney Avenue. The theme is “Silver and Gold: Holiday Wishes” and the grandstand will be in front of the old SunTrust Building, 123 North Main St.West Washington and North Main streets will be restricted from noon to 10 p.m.

The Downtown Hampton Lighted Boat Parade returns Saturday from 2 to 10 p.m.The day begins with Santa’s arrival by boat and free photos with him at his boathouse.
