Sports can sum up the best and the worst parts of life. I have long been a proponent of how sports, especially growing up, can give athletes unique perspectives on life, and help with maturity, as well as being better prepared in life. This week those thoughts translate into two stories I have in the Pleasanton Weekly about 15-year-old sophomores at Foothill High School.

The Amador Valley girls’ softball team will face the toughest test of the season since the Dons made their legendary run to the CIF Northern California championship last year when they play in the Livermore Stampede this week. In fact, the Dons also saw the same teams in their North Coast Section Division I run as all four semifinalists entered into the 2025 Stampede in California, Amador Valley, Liberty and College Park. Granada and San Ramon Valley were quarterfinalists.

If it’s spring break time for the East Bay Athletic League, it can only mean one thing — the Livermore Stampede is riding into town. The Stampede has become arguably the best high school softball in Northern California and one of the top events in the entire state. How good is the talent this year? Very good. Take a look at the postseason last year.

The Foothill High boys’ volleyball team capped an amazing week by winning the top level of the Stockton Classic. The tournament win was the Falcons’ first regular season tournament win since 2014. But before getting to the weekend and the tournament, the Falcons won a pair of big East Bay Athletic League games. They opened the week with a 17-25, 25-20, 25-18, 25-23 win over Amador Valley.

Overall, this year for Foothill High junior baseball player George Schmitt Jr. has been a case of this being his world and we’re all just living in it. Through 14 games, the left-handed batter is hitting .438 in the season. Schmitt has also scored 12 runs, walked eight times, drove in 15 runs and jacked three home runs.
