    President Donald J. Trump wants to bring more factories and manufacturing to America. We applaud his efforts but realize he has an uphill road to get there, mainly having the workforce to do the job. I think one of the problems we have today with our workforce was brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic when there were so many layoffs and unemployment benefits were extended for many months.     The Mecklenburg County High School varsity softball team fell 10-4 at Tunstall, the Piedmont District champions, in its regular season finale last Wednesday evening. The loss dropped the Phoenix to 11-9, 6-4 Piedmont District. Mecklenburg, the No. 5 seed, is scheduled to hit the road for a Region 4D tournament contest on Wednesday against the No. 4 seed.

    The Brunswick High School varsity baseball team jumped out to a 11-2 lead in the first inning on Friday evening but visiting Sussex-Central HS fought back and took the lead for good with six runs in the top of the seventh to claim a 16-12 victory in the regular season finale. The loss dropped the Bulldogs to 3-8 on the season. Brunswick will open Region 1B play this week with a road contest.

    Beef is still king in the meat case, but with younger generations wanting to expand and explore different flavors, competition will rise. Some competition will come from other meats. Pork, lamb, chicken, turkey and bison are showing up in the grind, or as we know it in the beef industry, ground beef or hamburger products. Through the years, if there ever was a success in the beef business, it was ground beef.

    The wet weather across the area last week forced both of the Brunswick High School baseball and softball teams’ scheduled games to be postponed. It has certainly been a constant the past few weeks as both teams have endured a number of postponements due to wet field conditions. Brunswick High School Athletic Director Darrell Owens said the Tri-Rivers District decided not to hold district tournaments this spring so teams can get in as many games as possible before regional play starts.
