Sexual size dimorphism (SSD) in body mass varies greatly across animal species, even among closely related taxa (e.g. Nuñez-Rosas et al. 2017, Agha et al. 2018, Portik et al. 2020). For instance, female-biased SSD is common in invertebrates and ectothermic vertebrates, such as the blanket octopus, Tremoctopus violaceus, in which females can reach ≤40 000 times the weight of the male (Norman et al. 2002).
