For the first time since 2010, the Moncton Wildcats will host a Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League championship game. The Wildcats play the Rimouski Oceanic Saturday and Sunday night at the Avenir Centre for the Gilles-Courteau Trophy but there’s little on the line other than bragging rights. Rimouski is the host team for this year’s Memorial Cup, so both the winner and the loser of the best of seven series will advance to the four-team national championship.

A so-called mystery disease that hundreds of New Brunswickers say they suffer from doesn’t exist according to a new medical study released Wednesday. Published in the journal JAMA Neurology, the study reviewed the cases of 25 patients that were evaluated at two hospitals in New Brunswick and Ontario. Dr. Anthony Lang, co-author of the study, said in 100 per cent of the cases evaluated, they were able to make a diagnosis of an established neurological problem.

For thousands of years, the Mi’kmaq in New Brunswick have relied on salmon, or as they call it, plamu, to sustain themselves. Now, that is very much in jeopardy with the Atlantic Salmon population in the Miramichi River shrinking at an alarming rate. Joe Augustine, a biologist and field technician with the North Shore Mi’kmaq Tribal Council (NSMTC), explained the drop in numbers through the perspective of an Indigenous person.

The status of a vacant property in downtown Moncton that was recently damaged by fire remains unclear. A spokesperson for the City of Moncton said the property at 256 High St. is currently being investigated by both Fire Prevention and By-Law Enforcement for a possible by-law infraction. Firefighters were called to the two-storey building in the early morning of April 23.
