    Canada’s economy grew at an annualized rate of 2.2 per cent during the first quarter. Statistics Canada said the growth was primarily driven by exports, coinciding with the U.S. tariffs. Higher imports and weak residential structure resale activity tempered overall growth, it said. Growth in household spending slowed to 0.3 per cent, down from 1.2 per cent the previous quarter. Increases in rental fees for housing and financial services were almost offset by lower spending on passenger vehicles.

    The family of a missing Grand Bay-Westfield senior continue to seek information on her disappearance. Ruth Carol Sutton, who also goes by Carol, was last seen walking Sunday morning along Mallard Drive. Police have said the 79-year-old woman has a medical condition which could make her disoriented. An official search operation was launched soon after but was suspended by the RCMP on Wednesday. However, community members have continued the search, recently focusing on the water and shoreline.

    It might be a good idea to hold off on filling up your vehicle’s fuel tank, according to an industry source. Regular self-serve gasoline and diesel prices are expected to fall by around four cents per litre on Thursday night. Maximum prices currently hover at around $1.48 per litre for regular self-serve and $1.46 per litre for diesel. In Nova Scotia, regular self-serve ranges from $1.45 to $1.49 per litre while diesel is selling for between $1.41 and $1.45 per litre.

    The Moncton Wildcats are one step closer to clinching their first Memorial Cup championship. The Wildcats downed the host Rimouski Océanic 6-2 in the final round-robin game on Wednesday night. Moncton’s win secured their spot in the semifinal and eliminated the host team from the tournament. The Wildcats took an early lead with a goal from Julius Sumpf at 7:39 in the first period. Rimouski came back swinging with two back-to-back goals, giving them a 2-1 lead at the end of the first.
