A renovated gymnasium at l’Université de Moncton’s physical education and sports centre is one step closer to reality. Provincial officials were on hand at the Centre d’éducation physique et des sports Louis-J.-Robichaud on Monday to announce $5 million in funding. Part of that money will go toward gym renovations while the rest will be used to help plan a larger modernization and expansion of the centre’s facilities.

It is described as a once-in-a-generation opportunity by city officials, but many residents in the Lorneville area do not feel the same. The Kam River Fighting Walleye suffered their first loss at the Centennial Cup in Calgary. They fell 3-1 to the Grand Prairie Storm in their second game of the tournament Sunday night. The Walleye are now 1-1 at the national Junior A hockey championship, their first game was an overtime win over the Trenton Golden Hawks. They get right back at it Monday night in Calgary against the Northern Manitoba Blizzard.

Former Conservative leader Andrew Scheer will lead the party in Parliament for the time being. Scheer was chosen as the interim Opposition leader by party caucus members on Tuesday. The role was needed after party leader Pierre Poilievre failed to be re-elected in his Ottawa-area riding. Without a seat in the House of Commons, he is not able to serve as Opposition leader. Alberta MP-elect Damian Kurek is giving up his seat so Poilievre can run in a byelection.

The provincial NDP wants the government to levy fines and penalties against private healthcare clinics that charge unfair fees. The party’s health critic France Gélinas attempted to get legislation passed in the previous session only to see it voted down after Second Reading. Gelinas says even the Auditor General has identified it being an issue that needs to be addressed.
