SAN ANGELO – The Bangs Lady Dragons completed a Class 2A Division I Region I softball area round sweep, and are bound for the third round of the playoffs following Saturday’s 13-2 victory in Game 2 over Forsan at San Angelo Central High School. Winners of Game 1 by a 5-2 count Thursday, the Lady Dragons (25-7) will next face Clarendon (22-5-1) in the regional semifinal round.

AUSTIN – The 2025 UIL Track and Field State Championships concluded Saturday at the University of Texas’ Myers Stadium, with local schools collecting six medals. Earning state championships were Zephyr’s Ronni McClain, who defended her Class 1A girls pole vault title with a best effort of 10-10. Also, Richland Springs Coyote Brice Roesler brought home gold in the 1A boys shot put with a top performance of 51-3.
Bangs, Early school board races decided in general election

Bangs and Early school board elections were on the ballot locally for Brown County residents for Saturday’s May 3 general election. Joy Mitchell, with 248 votes, and Dennis Sanchez, with 189 votes, will join the Bangs ISD Board of Trustees, outdistancing Eric Lykins (173) and Robert (R.C.) Lehman (168) in the battle for two open seats. In the race to fill an unexpired term on the Bangs ISD Board of Trustees, Blu Tidwell received 249 votes to the 157 of his challenger, Larry Lehman.
Lions slip past Estacado, 2-1, in first game of bi-district playoff series

ABILENE – The Brownwood Lions moved within one victory of a third consecutive baseball bi-district championship as they edged Lubbock Estacado, 2-1, Friday at Cooper High School in the first game of a best of three Class 4A Division I Region I first-round series. Games 2 and 3, if needed, will be back at Cooper at 1 p.m. Saturday. Tied at 1 in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Lions (13-16) capitalized on a critical Estacado (13-16-1) mistake to score what would be the decisive run.
Bangs baseball season ends with 11-0 loss to Hawley

EULA – The Bangs Dragons’ baseball season ended Friday with an 11-0 loss to Hawley in Game 2 of a Class 2A Division I Region I bi-district playoff series. Bangs (15-10), which dropped the series opener, 9-1, Thursday, was limited to one hit – that by Kaleb Biggs – while the Dragon defense committed six errors. Hawley scored four runs each in the first and second innings, tacked on one in the fourth, and chipped in two more in the fifth, thanks in part to 13 hits.

Ricky David Patterson, 63, of Brownwood, Texas passed away Wednesday, April 23, 2025. Services are pending. Rick was born August 5, 1961 in San Francisco, CA to Garland James and Theresa Padia Patterson. He grew up in Fairfield, California and attended high school at Armijo High School. Rick moved to Brownwood and worked for the City of Brownwood from 2001 – 2012 where he worked in container maintenance and drove truck. He was a huge fan of the San Francisco 49ers and loved Nascar.

GRAHAM – After much of the regular season felt like a roller coaster ride, the Brownwood Lady Lions have found their groove in the playoffs, as their fourth straight victory secured a second consecutive sweep, an area championship, and a trip to the Class 4A Division I Region I semifinals. The Lady Lions capped an area round sweep of the Decatur Lady Eagles with a 12-8 victory Friday afternoon, on the heels of a 7-5 triumph Thursday night.
