The City of Winnipeg is starting controlled burns in natural areas this week. The city said burns will be happening until June 14, depending on the weather and wind conditions. “Fire plays an important role in the preservation and restoration of prairies. Lack of fire allows weeds to invade these endangered plant communities,” the city said in a news release. On the city’s website, it notes wildfires bring nutrients back to the soil and new growth follows.

The Manitoba government is providing $1.5 million to help the Anne Oake Family Recovery Centre. During an announcement at the Bruce Oake Recovery Centre on Tuesday, the province said $1 million would go to help cover construction costs, while $500,000 would be used for more detox beds and treatment options. “We believe and know that every woman deserves the opportunity to heal, not just for herself, but for her children and for her community. Energy that Manitoba sends to the United States will now stay north of the border, with some of it destined for a northern territory, Premier Wab Kinew announced Monday. The Manitoba government is planning to turn Lemay Forest into a provincial park. While taking questions at a Manitoba Hydro news conference, Premier Wab Kinew said the province is planning to expropriate the forest and convert it into a park. “I want the chainsaws to stop,” Kinew said. The forest is owned by Tochal Developments and conversations around it have been heated for several months since tree cutting started last year.
