The fourth annual Prime Minister’s Spelling Bee saw a national final of “firsts”. For the first time in the competition’s history, no student scored 30/30 in the tough third round – all three new champions scored 29/30. Only the second NSW champion since free classroom news site Kids News launched the Bee in 2021, Sydney’s Aditya Paul has entered the free spelling challenge every year.

READING LEVEL: GREENAussie kids have shown their might in the school round of the fourth annual Prime Minister’s Spelling Bee. Run by Kids News, the Bee’s record-breaking 70,557 student registrations nationwide were driven by two more new records: 2752 teachers at 1170 schools. The top 200 students in each state and territory across the three age categories now advance to finals, starting Monday.

READING LEVEL: GREENA record number of teachers have signed up for the free, online Prime Minister’s Spelling Bee, registering a record number of students across years 3-8. Over 63,000 stand counting are currently competing in the national school round. And there is still time to enter and play – the school round ends this Friday 23 August. Run by Kids News, the Bee’s busiest day for page views coincided with the release of NAPLAN results, with the Bee clocking over 51,000 views on August 14 alone.

Fresh out of the maternity ward after the birth of her second son Carter, Jules Robinson clearly likes a challenge. After adding “author” to her crowded CV with the release of her new book of down-to-earth Aussie wisdom Ask Jules, she and husband Cam Merchant are also midway through renovating. A giant workman even crept past the newborn as Jules was saying she was “not a natural writer”. “I’m a great storyteller, I’m a great communicator, but with writing I really had to find my way,” she said.

Olympians aren’t the only Aussies going for gold, with teachers nationwide registering over 35,000 students the Prime Minister’s Spelling Bee in its first two weeks, as experts weigh in on performance culture making a classroom comeback. Team psychologist for Australia’s Winter Olympics team in 2006 and the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games, performance coach, speaker and author Gavin Freeman said “performance” was simply part of being in the world.
