Finding growth in its other tobacco products (OTP) assortment, Arko Corp., is installing new backer board features allocating spending to this tobacco segment, the company reported in its 2024 third-quarter earnings call Nov. 7. During the earnings call, Arie Kotler, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Arko, said that OTP has been growing longer term. “And as a contribution margin rate, that is approximately 20 percentage points higher than our cigarettes category,” he said.

This month I hit the road for CSP’s C-Store Women event in Charleston, South Carolina. Fuel distributor and convenience-store operator CrossAmerica Partners LP reported a strong third quarter despite broader softness in fuel and store demand, the company said Nov. 6 in its earnings report. Net income for third-quarter 2024 was $10.7 million, compared to net income of $12.3 million in the prior-year quarter. The retail segment in third-quarter 2024 generated a 24% increase in gross profit compared to third-quarter 2023.

Arko Corp., the parent company of convenience-store retailer GPM Investments, reported lower third-quarter earnings on Nov. 7. Net income for third-quarter 2024 was $9.7 million compared to $21.5 million the same period last year. Adjusted EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) for third-quarter 2024 dipped to $78.8 million, versus $87.3 million in third-quarter 2023. The company said the decline was caused primarily by lower retail fuel and merchandise contribution.

Convenience-store retailers remain cautious on consumer demand for tobacco products and the outlook for the nicotine category, according to Goldman Sachs’ third-quarter 2024 Nicotine Nuggets survey. This view was attributed to various factors, including inflation, increased downtrading and the illicit market. Analyzed by New York-based Goldman Sachs managing director Bonnie Herzog, the survey represents around 40,000 c-store retail locations throughout the United States.
