The Van Andel Institute (VAI) — founded nearly three decades ago to advance biomedical research and science education — is awarding its 2025 Jay Van Andel Award to a University of Pittsburgh professor for his work on environmental factors in Parkinson’s disease. This year’s award will be presented to J. Timothy Greenamyre, MD, PhD, a neurologist and researcher who also serves as the director of the Pittsburgh Institute of Neurodegenerative Diseases.

Rare mutations that impair the normal activity of the ITSN1 gene were found to increase the risk of Parkinson’s disease by about 10 times, according to a study. The findings are in line with those of another recent study that linked ITSN1 mutations to an elevated Parkinson’s risk, particularly in those with an earlier age of disease onset.

By joining Gateway Labs, Kenai, formerly Ryne Biotechnologies, will have access to state-of-the-art facilities, along with resources and expertise from Lilly.

I became extremely frustrated with the whole treatment and research system when I was denied access to the Parkinson’s disease clinical trial I wanted to participate in. That prompted many questions: Why does research take so long? Where does all the fundraising money go? Why do I feel so far from the loop regarding meaningful research and development? I understand the need for safety, and I also understand the research world.

All patients have completed final follow-up visits in a Phase 2 clinical trial testing pirepemat, an oral treatment designed to reduce falls in Parkinson’s disease, and top-line results are expected in the first quarter, said developer Irlab Therapeutics. The development “marks an important milestone in our clinical development program for pirepemat,” Kristina Torfgård, PhD, CEO of Irlab, said in a company press release.

The motor cortex, a brain region responsible for movement control, becomes disconnected in levodopa-induced dyskinesia (LID), the uncontrolled movements that occur as a side effect of the drug levodopa in Parkinson’s disease, a study found. Ketamine, an anesthetic used to alleviate LID, was found to restore the motor cortex’s ability to regulate movement. The study, “Decoupling of motor cortex to movement in Parkinson’s dyskinesia rescued by sub-anaesthetic ketamine,” was published in Brain.

HL192, an experimental oral therapy being developed to treat Parkinson’s disease, was tolerated well by healthy volunteers in a first-in-human clinical trial. The therapy’s developers — Nurron Pharmaceuticals, working in partnership with Hanall Biopharma and Daewoong Pharmaceutical — said they are planning a trial to test HL192 in people with Parkinson’s. The companies didn’t say when testing in Parkinson’s is expected to begin.

I highlighted the obvious need to engineer better brain-body communications. People who received five or more courses of penicillin antibiotic treatment in the five years before a Parkinson’s diagnosis had an approximately 15% lower risk of developing the disease than those who took no antibiotics, according to a Rutgers Health study. Conversely, treatment with two or more courses of antifungals in the five years before diagnosis was associated with about a 16% higher risk of Parkinson’s disease.
