At the start of this past week, we were concerned with the potential for severe storms on Tuesday, which did materialize, and additional showers and thunderstorms for Thursday, with a few leftover showers on Friday. But at that time, there was hope that most of Saturday would be dry, and Sunday would be bright and crisp. “There was hope” is a clue things have changed since Monday, and not for the better. Thursday got May off to a soaking wet start, with heaviest rainfall on the Niagara Frontier.

All things considered, Monday will end up being the nicest day of the week. The upper 60s-low 70s, combined with brilliant sunshine and a light breeze, will not be duplicated for some time to come. Tuesday will start out nice enough, and will bring even warmer temperatures, heading into the upper 70s inland from Lake Erie (upper 60s at the lakeshore), with a partly sunny sky. A south-southwest wind may even send a few interior locations well east of the metro area toward the 80 degree mark.

Monday was the soggiest day we’ve had around here, especially on the Niagara Frontier. Northern Erie and Niagara counties got hit the hardest. To go with flooding in the north were scattered reports of wind damage from severe thunderstorms that crossed parts of the region in several rounds of convective cells. Up to this point, I doubt anyone is thinking about nominating this April for any awards, even with several genuinely nice days sprinkled in.

On Wednesday, there was hardly a sign of a mid-April feel or look to our weather. Not exactly what you would call an April 16 kind of vibe…. pic.twitter.com/kplfUIyGl1— Don Paul (@donpaulbitsosun) April 16, 2025Following high-elevation snow Tuesday night that brought 4.5 inches of accumulation to Springville and 3.7 inches to Warsaw, there were still flakes to be seen Wednesday, accompanied by a gloomy sky (again) and a raw breeze creating a wind chill in the 20s.

Before we get to the future, let’s take a quick look back at how we’ve fared in March. It was a mild month, even if you choose to focus on the chilly-to-cold days. Through Sunday, the Buffalo monthly mean temperature was running 6.1 degrees above average, a significant anomaly. We peaked with two 75-degree days, and a record 76 March 19. The coldest day, by far, was March 2, with a high of 22 and a low of 10.
