AUGUSTA -- A contest across Maine trade schools and high schools each year displays creativity and advocacy for becoming an organ donor. This year, the New England Donor Services High School Poster Contest winners all came from Freeport High School. New England Donor Services (NEDS) is the federally designated organ procurement organization. Folks gathered outside Augusta's Bureau of Motors Vehicles on Wednesday, May 28, to celebrate those four students and to bring awareness to organ donations.

STATE HOUSE -- A piece of legislation that aims to help childcare entrepreneurs open new facilities to increase the availability of childcare across Maine passed unanimously through the Health and Human Services Committee last week. Advocates of LD 1428 say it would allow childcare facilities to operate without an outdoor recreational space if the facility is within a reasonable distance of an outdoor recreational space.

STATE HOUSE -- Wednesday, May 28, was an annual advocacy day for a Maine-based association that supports people with intellectual disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, and brain injuries. Its focus on Wednesday, the state's budget. The Maine Association of Community Service Providers (MSCSP) is comprised of nearly 100 community-based organizations across the state. At the Hall of Flags, its members urged lawmakers to restore the Cost of Living Adjustments (COLA) for Direct Care Service Rates.

SKOWHEGAN -- A welfare check on Friday, May 23, by the Skowhegan Police Department led to the confiscation of over 20 grams of fentanyl. Authorities say they made contact with Lucas Gage, 36, at Holland Drug Variety Store in Skowhegan.
