    The rate of syphilis cases in the United States hit a historic low at the turn of the millennium, thanks to an emphasis on safe sex during the 1990s. But the disease is surging again, especially among seniors and newborns. In Virginia, its worst in Hampton Roads. “The unsafe sexual practices are increasing, and so this is really why it's not a spike, but it's been a general trend moving up from the 2000s up until now, and it keeps going up,” said Norfolk Health Director Susan Girois.

    The number of passengers heading through Norfolk International Airport continues its upward trajectory. Norfolk International Airport set passenger records in 2022 and 2023, with 4.5 million passing through the airport last year. This year, it hoped to top 5 million.     The head of Norfolk’s airport is looking to put the International back in Norfolk International Airport. Airport CEO Mark Perryman told Chesapeake’s City Council that they’re in talks with air carriers to line up direct flights to the Caribbean, Latin American and Europe. Norfolk currently doesn’t host any nonstop international flights. The catch: To lure those flights, someone needs to pony up financial assistance to guarantee revenues for the air carriers.

    Virginia Beach Public Schools budget staff recommended increasing teacher salaries between 3 and 3.5% to try to catch up with neighboring cities. “Currently, Virginia Beach City public schools rank six out of seven in starting salaries, just ahead of Newport News public schools by a mere five dollars,” budget development coordinator Cassandra Armstrong told the Virginia Beach school board this week.
