    Regional council will decide next week how to fill the council seat left vacant by the recent death of Kari Williams. The Kitchener councillor died in April following a multi-year battle with cancer. Next week staff will recommend the region declare the council seat vacant in accordance with the Municipal Act and will ask council to initiate one of a number of options to fill the vacant seat.

The 150-year-old structure is part of the Forbes Estate at 155 Guelph Ave. where a Fusion Homes subdivision is under construction.

Regional council will be asked next week to approve an amendment to the region's 10-year capital program by advancing the projects to this year's budget despite higher costs staff attribute to maintaining traffic flow while work proceeds.

    The Region of Waterloo is ending a long-standing framework that brought community partners together to combat the opioid crisis. On the advice of a steering committee working within the Waterloo Region integrated Drugs Strategy (WRIDS), the region will stop funding a coordinator position for the organization by year end. The coordinator provided the WRIDS steering committee with administrative and operational support to host various working groups within the organization.

    Opposition to a plan that would have eliminated several on-street parking spots to accommodate cycle tracks appears to have stalled the scheduled reconstruction of Ainslie Street indefinitely. The 2026 project between Concession and Water streets includes replacement of sanitary and storm sewers, watermain, traffic signals, street lighting, road resurfacing, concrete curb and gutter, and sidewalks between Concession and Simcoe streets.
