Jun. 20—Thousands of CMP customers lost power Friday as high winds blew across the state. Over 36,000 customers have been affected throughout the day, according to a CMP spokesperson, peaking at about 21,200 in the afternoon. Over 6,300 customers in Waldo County, nearly 4,000 in York County, over 3,000 in Cumberland County and about 2,500 customers in Androscoggin County were without power as of about 2:40 p.m., according to CMP's website.

Jun. 18—The state's Animal Welfare Program has launched an independent investigation into the death of Baxter, a 3-year-old comfort dog who died last month inside a state vehicle. Baxter, a chocolate Labrador retriever who joined the Maine Bureau of Emergency Communications in 2022, was the state's first official comfort dog.

Jun. 18—Maine is suing the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration for canceling a $9 million grant the state received last year for habitat restoration projects. The state alleges in the lawsuit filed Tuesday that NOAA violated several federal laws in rescinding the funding in April, including the 10th Amendment. It claims NOAA pulled the funding as part of President Donald Trump's effort to punish Maine for not banning transgender athletes from women's sports.
