Cal Poly Men’s Basketball was picked to finish dead last in the Big West preseason coaches’ poll before the season. Henderson, Nev. – As Mike DeGeorge sat at the postgame press conference and made his opening statement, it was clear Cal Poly’s win over UC Riverside in the Big West Championships quarterfinals wasn’t surprising to him. “We’re just coming in, and if we play the way we’re capable of, we can get anybody in this tournament,” DeGeorge said. The 96-83 win marked the first time the program will advance to the tournament semifinals since the 2013-14 season.

Long gone are the days of a 46-game Big West losing streak and an offense struggling to score more than 80 points a game. First-year Head Coach Mike DeGeorge has come in and injected a breath of fresh air into a program that has been suffocating since the 2013-14 season.

Cal Poly Wrestling was handled by California Baptist, 22-16, before also falling against Northwestern, 29-14, Thursday at Mott Athletics Center. The Mustangs (0-4) started hot against the Lancers (5-2, 2-0 Big 12) and Wildcats (2-1) thanks to 125-pound redshirt sophomore Koda Holeman. Still, they couldn’t get much going outside of that and redshirt junior heavyweight Trevor Tinker’s performance.
