Disturbances in gut microbiota composition may underpin Western lifestyle diseases. Because the gut microbiota is generally confined to the gut, attention has focused on the role of microbiota metabolites that may be transported through the blood. One of the main functions of the gut microbiota is fermentation of dietary fiber to produce SCFAs.1 SCFAs increase intestinal barrier integrity, thereby lessening the chance of LPS and bacterial leakage into the body.
