FT-ED clinicians highlighted a number of unique considerations when delivering this modality to Autistic young people, including the increased prevalence of neurodivergence within families and risk of missattunement within the systemic context. FT-ED clinicians highlighted the late identification of autism in young people presenting to eating disorder services and the added complexity of differentiating between Autistic traits and an eating disorder.

This study used an observational design and was conducted at the One-stop center for FED of the Unit of Psychiatry of the University Hospital of Udine, Italy. All consecutively assessed patients went through eligibility screening to participate in the study. The inclusion criteria were as follows: (i) diagnosis of a FED in adults according to DSM-5 criteria [17]; and (ii) inclusion in a standardized psychodiagnostic procedure following the agreement of a multidisciplinary team.

We all know (hopefully) that society encourages eating disorders and disordered eating behaviours. A lot of YouTubers and Tiktokers provide so-called healthy eating plans or “recovery” FDOEs (full day of eating) which sometimes include calorie counts as low as three digits. This trend is based on the dieting mindset of the 1980s and 1990s, but has taken it to a new level. It suggests to young kids and even older people who are impressionable, that if you eat more than that, you are eating too much.
