The fibrosis marker collagen type I (COL1) and myofibroblast marker α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) were first assessed in lung biopsy samples from control and IPF patients. Lung tissues from IPF patients showed comparatively higher levels of COL1 and α-SMA than those from control subjects (Fig. 1A). Although increased mRNA levels of COL1A1 and ACTA2 were detected in cultured lung fibroblasts from IPF compared to control patients (Additional file: Fig.

Organotypic cortical slices were prepared from the cortical tissue, surgically resected to gain access to the pathology (Table 1). Approval (# 772/2021BO2) of the ethics committee of the University of Tübingen as well as written informed consent was obtained from all patients, whose resected tissue was used in this study. Immunohistochemical data shown in Supplementary Fig.

The KORA (Cooperative Health Research in the Augsburg Region, Germany) MR-imaging study is a cross-sectional sub-study investigating the interactions between subclinical metabolic and cardiovascular disease in a study sample of 400 participants with prediabetes, T2DM, and normoglycemia from southern Germany. This KORA-MRI study is a subsample of the KORA FF4 Study (n = 2279), which is the second follow-up of the original population-based KORA S4 survey.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) contamination in marine environments range from low-diffusive inputs to high loads. The influence of PAH concentration on the expression of functional genes (e.g., those encoding ring-hydroxylating dioxygenases; RHDs), has been overlooked in PAH biodegradation studies. However, understanding marker-gene expression under different PAH loads can help monitor and predict bioremediation efficiency.
