    Work to replace the Commercial Street Bridge on the Parkway East just outside the outbound the Squirrel Hill Tunnel kicks into high gear this week. Crews will close the shoulder and right outbound lane from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Thursday nights between the tunnel and the Edgewood/Swissvale exit. The closure will allow the contractor to build a retaining wall as part of the bridge project.

    Allegheny County switched the open side of the Armstrong Tunnel from the inbound to the outbound direction Thursday so crews can finish the last few weeks of a $13.1 million project to rehabilitate the tunnel between Forbes and Second avenues in Pittsburgh’s Uptown neighborhood. Mosites Construction Co. will do some final work on the inbound side, including additional roadwork, before the tunnel resumes operation for vehicles on both sides sometime next month.

    Several changes in local roadwork will begin Thursday. Here’s the breakdown:Birmingham Bridge – The inbound lanes will be closed and traffic will be crossed over to the outbound lanes at 6 a.m. Thursday so crews can begin replacing expansion dams on the bridge that crosses the Monongahela River between Pittsburgh’s South Side and Oakland neighborhoods.

    Traffic on the Pennsylvania Turnpike continues to exceed expectations, allowing the agency to dedicate more money to capital improvements. The Turnpike Commission passed its 2025-26 general budget at $459.7 million Tuesday and a capital plan that calls for $900.1 million in spending. The size of the capital budget is about $83 million more than projected last year after a consultant predicted flat traffic on the toll road over the next five years.

    Questionable weather could cause some changes, but a lot of road work is scheduled to start or move into a new phase in the Pittsburgh area this week. Here are the highlights:Route 28 – Work will begin Monday on the $4.8 million warning system for wrong-way drivers on the busy highway. Power Contracting Co. will begin work to install flashing lights and signs to warn drivers if they enter the highway going the wrong direction between Downtown Pittsburgh and Harmar.
