Smoke from Canadian fires is affecting Montana and northern Wyoming Monday, especially west of Rosebud (Forsyth) County including Yellowstone (Billings) County. Air quality is expected to improve Monday night through Tuesday with a pattern change in the winds.

BILLINGS — Some weak convection has resulted in scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms Wednesday afternoon, mainly in eastern Montana. Expect more of the same through sunset. There is a low chance of precipitation overnight, especially in Sheridan County. Wyoming and along the southeast Montana / Wyoming border, with overall wetter conditions remaining to the south. Another shortwave will lead to scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening on Thursday.

After late weekend rain reports of of a quarter to a half-inch, the main area of precipitation is shifting toward northeast Montana. While conditions will be drier overall, there remains a chance for showers Monday night and Tuesday, particularly in the mountains and foothills near the Wyoming/Montana border. Another disturbance will cross western Montana into northern Wyoming Tuesday night into Wednesday, bringing showers over the higher terrains.

BILLINGS — Isolated strong to severe thunderstorms continue Sunday evening primarily west of Billings. The biggest threats are strong winds and up to quarter-sized hail. Heavy rainfall is also a concern. Thunderstorm activity will decrease into the evening, but rain becomes more widespread due to an upper trough moving east. Monday:An upper level trough will bring another wave of showers and thunderstorms.

BILLINGS — Wednesday evening, we transition from scattered cumulus clouds to clearer skies, with overnight lows generally in the 40s. There’s a low risk of localized fog in eastern Montana and near Sheridan, Wyoming late tonight into early Thursday. Morning temperatures will be mainly in the 40s. Thursday is expected to be dry with high temperatures ranging from the 70s to low 80s, but skies may be hazy from wildfire smoke.
