Missoula celebrating National Pollinators Week

MISSOULA — Missoula residents will have multiple opportunities this week to help the bugs that make our plants grow. This week marks National Pollinator Week which was created to celebrate bees and others that spread the pollen that helps the plants and crops grow. The Missoula County Department of Ecology kicked the week off Monday with a walk through the University of Montana campus and take in a session to learn how to build bee hotels.

MISSOULA — Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) will be holding a bear safety event on Tuesday, June 18 in Missoula. You can learn more about bears and bear safety and will also be able to learn how to use bear spray. FWP staff will on hand to talk about bear safety practices, bear biology, and how to handle bear encounters. The training will take place from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at the Missoula FWP office which is located at 3201 Spurgin Road.

Missoula County signs new healthcare contract for local, state inmates

MISSOULA — Missoula County inked a new contract with a medical firm to provide services to inmates held at the Missoula County Detention Facility, including state inmates whose daily costs exceed what the state reimburses. Commissioners on Tuesday signed the 5-year contract with Wellpath, a national healthcare provider that cares for roughly 300,000 inmates in 37 states. The services provided to the county include medical, behavioral health and dental.

BILLINGS — A Billings restaurant owner who preyed on female employees has been sentenced to 10 years in prison. Chien "Howard" Hwa Shen, 51, appeared Friday for sentencing in Yellowstone County District Court following a jury trial last year that resulted in six convictions related to the sexual abuse of several women. Shen was convicted of felony charges of sexual intercourse without consent, prostitution, and two counts of sexual assault inflicting bodily injury.

Judge Ashley Harada did not give a reason for the move to disqualify herself from the case just a short time before the sentencing hearing was set to begin in her courtroom Wednesday morning. Judges are not required to provide a reason for such a disqualification.

Woman sentenced to prison for shooting inside Montana hospital emergency room

BILLINGS — A woman who shot herself and then was shot by a police officer inside a Billings hospital emergency room has been sentenced to prison. Panda Emily Aradia, 38, has been ordered to serve a total of 20 years, with five years suspended, following her conviction at trial on felony charges of criminal endangerment and assault with a weapon. The charges were filed following a shooting incident at the Billings Clinic Emergency Department on Oct. 16, 2022.
